Black people are about 7½ times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder in the U.S. than are whites, and about 80% more likely to be innocent than others convicted of murder, according to a new report by the National Registry of Exonerations. The already disproportionate risk of wrongful conviction, the Registry found, was even worse if the murder victim in a case was white. source
Black Americans are statistically more likely to be victims of hate crimes compared to other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. The FBI and research centers have reported that Black Americans account for roughly 22% to 30% of all reported hate crime victims over recent years, which is the highest proportion among racial groups. source
Safety and Violence: Black children (0-17) are over 13.6 times more likely to die by firearm homicide than white peers, and young Black males (18-24) are nearly 23 times more likely. source
Education: Black K-12 students are more likely to worry about their safety in school, with less than 40% agreeing their school is safe. source
Health Outcomes: Black adults are more likely to have hypertension, diabetes, and strokes. They are also 35% more likely to die from major heart and blood vessel diseases. source
Military Service: Black Americans are more likely to serve in the military and in civilian roles. source
Despite accounting for only 14% of the U.S. population, Black people account for 60% of those killed by firearm homicide each year. On average, Black people are over 11.5 times more likely to be victims of firearm homicide than their non-Hispanic white peers. source
Chronic Conditions: Black Americans are nearly twice as likely to develop dementia as white Americans. source
Maternal Health: Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. source
