Black Immigrants Deported More Often Than Other Groups

Updated: Aug 14

Studies indicate that Black immigrants in the United States face disproportionately higher rates of deportation compared to other immigrant groups, even when accounting for factors like criminal historysource

  • Overrepresentation in Deportation Proceedings: Black migrants make up a small percentage of the undocumented population (around 7.2% of all non-citizens and 5.4% of the undocumented population), but they represent a much higher proportion of those facing deportation, particularly those facing deportation based on criminal grounds. source

  • Criminal Grounds for Deportation: Black immigrants are disproportionately represented in deportation proceedings based on criminal convictions, accounting for 20% of such cases despite being only 7% of the non-citizen population.

  • Institutional Racism: Research highlights how racial bias inherent in both the criminal justice and immigration systems contributes to these disparities. source

  • Data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) shows the deportation rate for Hispanic/Latino immigrants in 2020 was 63.4%, compared to 45.1% for Black immigrants and 34.6% for White immigrants. source

  • Disproportionate representation in deportation proceedings: While only 7% of U.S. immigrants are Black, they make up 20% of those facing deportation based on criminal convictions. This reflects a racial disparity nearly three times their share of the non-citizen population. source

  • Black immigrants in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) disproportionately face abuse while in detention source

“Irish and Italian immigrants, along with some white-passing Latinx immigrants, can assimilate into white America,” said Abraham Paulos, director of policy and communications for the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI). “Black immigrants don’t have that option. We’re integrated into Black America along with all the systems of oppression and discrimination.” source
